Breaking Down the Differences between Retractable Screen Mesh

Not all retractable screen systems are created equal. Through a rigorous testing process, Craft-Bilt screens have proven to withstand even the most challenging environments. While screens can be manufactured using a variety of different materials, we only use PET (polyethylene terephthalate) for our products. We believe that installing screens comprised of PET is the perfect choice for homeowners since this material is affordable, yet strong enough to resist external forces and keep your home well protected long-term. Find these and other products for your home on our website or in person at our facility located near Toronto, ON.

4 Types of Screen Mesh

Since screen mesh comes in different materials, we understand how easy it is to become overwhelmed when you are faced with a range of options. Fortunately, we are here to guide you through some of the most popular materials used in creating these products so you can choose the most effective retractable screen for your space:

  • Fiberglass – This material is relatively inexpensive, easy to source, and extremely lightweight. It is one of the most commonly used materials to create the mesh component of a screen door and is also resistant to denting when hit or pushed. However, fiberglass mesh is only durable to an extent. Screens made out of this material can be easily torn with enough force by children, pets, etc.
  • Polypropylene (PP) – Mesh made up of PP does not break down very easily when faced with water, detergents, and other solvents. Generally, products made from this material can withstand regular wear and tear. However, PP is not UV resistant and is an extremely flammable substance if handled incorrectly.
  • Polyethylene (PE) – Often desired for its resistance to abrasion, corrosion, and high-impact, PE is another popular material used in screen door manufacturing. Nevertheless, this material is typically more expensive than PP and its counterparts.
  • Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) – By installing a retractable screen that features PET mesh, you can be certain that it is up to 7 times stronger than traditionally built screens. Therefore, this type of mesh is ideal for families that have small children or pets. Not only is it built to last, products using PET are also very energy-efficient and can be easily recycled into new goods.

A Guide to Retractable Screen Installation – Simple, Quick and Efficient

With Craft-Bilt retractable pleated screens, you can enjoy the outdoors like never before. Our products are an ideal solution for homeowners looking for convenient, cost effective, and low maintenance retractable screening options. We are proud to offer retractable screen systems that follow a simple installation process, allowing you to make use of and enjoy your new screened-in porch or patio immediately.

Steps for Installing Your New Screen System

Installation is a breeze with our retractable pleated screens. Due to its low profile, your screen can be installed virtually anywhere including openings that may not be perfectly square or levelled. Before you begin, make sure you have all the required tools and materials and read the instructions carefully. By following a few easy steps, you can begin using your retractable screen in no time:

  1. Clear the Area – Once you have established the area where you would like to install your retractable screen, ensure that the opening is level and clean. However, Craft-Bilt pleated screens are extremely forgiving and do not necessarily require a level opening. For instance, along the run of your opening, our screens will allow a rise of ½ an inch or a drop of ¼ inch.
  1. Installation Process – We take pride in how easy and effective our pleated screen installation can be for you. After laying out all your parts, begin by fastening your top track, followed by fastening your jamb and base-jamb to the sides of the opening, and finally lay down the ultra low sill that features convenient two-sided tape. Once these parts are correctly installed, it is time to insert the screen cartridge. Using a piece of wood to spread the top track, line up the pull-bar retainer and insert. Remove the wood and align the bottom of the screen cartridge to the bottom sill until it snaps into place.
  1. Ensure Smooth Operation – After the installation process is complete, make sure your pleated screen runs smoothly by extending and retracting it. If you find that the pull-bar does not completely close to the jamb, your screen does not fully retract, or the system is not operating smoothly, refer to our trouble-shooting guide.
